Notes on Database
This key is intended to be used in conjunction with the accompanying text and database (data). Suggestions for using the database can also be found in the accompanying notes on Locke's medical books: (locke).
The database has 11 fields, as follows.
The financial details and dates come from the original registers in the Bibliothèque nationale and the Archives nationales; details of work done or occupation etc. are taken from Guiffrey.
CDB: the location in Guiffrey's edition of the Comptes.
Thus, 1:237 refers to volume 1, column 237.
Occupation: Ac+ (= academician); Ae+(= assistant, élève).
Work_done: abbreviated from CdB.
Work2: occasional notes only.
Cost: may include the following which can be searched separately:
Cost in livres, sous (or sols) and deniers.
$O (= mathematicians); $A (= biologists);$B (= binding, books);
$C (= capital expenditure); $R (=non-capital); $G (= gratification).
$ins (= instruments); $map (= maps/mapping); $grav (= graphics)
%D (= given in 'Diverses Depenses')
bs (= bills). Thus, '4/6' indicates the 4th bill of a total of 6
shown by Guiffrey as a single entry.
@AC (= on account); @PP (= 'parfait payement') @RE
(=reimbursement). Interim payments on account are usually
for round sums like 1,000 livres and whatever was still owing
was paid later (see @PP).
Cost_2: decimalized cost (deniers ignored - often nil. Number of sous
rounded down).
Ref1: recipient of expenditure ($O or $A or $R).
Ref2: nature of expenditure ($C or $R or $G).
Spare: the accounting period (needed for automatic calculation
of totals etc.). Thus, '77' indicates the period 77/78, standing for
1st July 1677 - 30th June 1678.
